This is the song I wrote for final project of Essentials Blue Course.
Forever I’ll Worship You
“For: The Essentials Blue Online Worship History Course with Dan Wilt“
Final Project: After the lesson on God’s nature, I decided I wanted to write a song based on the theology of the Trinity. As Dan Wilt said, one of the greatest challenges facing contemporary worship leaders will be in addressing songs, prayers, and words directly to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. So, I thought I would give it a try. (1) I used N. T. Wright’s Trinitarian prayer quoted in the study as my guide:
Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth;
Set up your kingdom in our midst.
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God;
Have mercy on me, a sinner.
Holy Spirit, breath of the living God;
Renew me and all the world. (2)
We are to worship God with our heart, soul, mind and strength. The Kingdom is present; so worship the Lord. The Kingdom is coming; so prepare to worship the King in holiness.
This is my “new song” I bring to worship God. May the Holy Spirit take my song, cleanse it and make it acceptable to God.
“My heart and my flesh, sing for the glory to the living God.” (Psalms 84:2)

FOREVER I”LL WORSHIP YOU
God my Father, Lord of Creation. Let your Kingdom come.
Give me a new heart, draw me near you. Let my soul rejoice.
For your glory LORD, let my heart sing. Forever I’ll worship you.
For your glory LORD, let my heart sing. Forever I’ll worship you.
Lord my Savior, loving Jesus. You have rescued me.
You have given life eternal. I have been set free.
For your glory LORD, let my heart sing. Forever I’ll worship you.
For your glory LORD, let my heart sing. Forever I’ll worship you.
Holy Spirit, come and fill me, make me holy, pure.
Give me a new song, to tell God’s story. Let my spirit soar.
For your glory LORD, let my heart sing. Forever I’ll worship you.
For your glory LORD, let my heart sing. Forever I’ll worship you.
Let my soul rejoice, Let my spirit soar. Let me lift my voice in praise.
Sing a new song, for your glory LORD. Forever I’ll worship you.

Worship Theology: A Christian Worldview
“For: The Essentials Blue Online Worship History Course with Dan Wilt“
This week we were asked to reflect on the theological ideas related to God’s nature, His purpose in the world, and the role of human beings and write a summary “worldview” document. This is my summary statement of belief.
“A Christian Worldview”
Of Creation, Redemption, the Kingdom of God
And The New Creation
****
There is One God, our Father, God of the universe, creator of Heaven and Earth. God created us “in His image” so that we would show forth His glory in the world. We are the mirror image in which God looks to see Himself. We are the reflection of the glory of God, which was the purpose and intention of God originally.
Mankind fell from his first origins and destroyed the glory of God, and the mirror was broken. Mankind, in his fallen state has forgotten who he is, where he came from and what his purpose is in this world.
Therefore, through His great mercy, God sent for His Son, Jesus Christ, to save us and to draw us back to Him again. Through Jesus, the Kingdom of God arrived and a new creation began.
With heaven and earth interlocking and intermingling we hear the echoes of God’s voice reminding us of our purpose and His plan for the world. When the Kingdom of God begins to break through the voice becomes clearer and we experience God’s presence. The Kingdom of God is the fellowship of God in Christ.
Through our faith in Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit works within us to renew our hearts and minds. We begin to long for righteousness and holiness. We are spiritually changed and we begin to remember what God’s purpose is for us and the world.
Our life goal is to glorify God in Christ in all we say and do. We must take hold of God’s word and join in with the people of God to proclaim the good news of salvation through Jesus Christ, our Lord. We are called to tell the story of God’s creation and redemption.
We must remind ourselves what we are here for and be courageous as we travel though this world together to God’s New Jerusalem.
When Christ returns there will be a new heaven and a new earth. The people of God will once again fully reflect back to God the radiance of His worth and glory in a new and perfect body as we worship, work, play, dance and sing in God’s New Creation.

Worship Theology: The Nature of Human Beings
“For: The Essentials Blue Online Worship History Course with Dan Wilt“
This week we focused on essential worship ideas related to the origins of human beings according to the Scriptures, and the nature of those who worship, those created in the image of God. (1)
We covered a great deal of material this week. I have only posted a brief comment below based on the discussion question we were given. There is so much more I hope to write about later. As I said last week, I couldn’t wait to dive deeper into our study. I feel like I am in deep waters right now and my thoughts are “swimming” around so fast, I can’t seem to pull them all “into the boat” in the short amount of time I have this week. I can truthfully tell you that I am experiencing “ahhhh haa” moments.
**********
Human beings are a “strange mix of beauty and brokenness”. (2) We have many unique personalities, styles, and ideas. We are created to be loving, creative, giving, sharing, guiding, caring, and protecting creatures; but “we forget who we are, where we came from, who the people are around us and we forget who God is.” (3)
This lesson has definitely made me aware of how we “relate to God, others, ourselves and with creation.” (4) “When the kingdom breaks through we mourn over the brokenness of the world. We hunger and thirst after righteousness. We are called to a right-relatedness in our relationships.” (5)
To stop and seriously reflect upon what it means to be Sub Creators, Image Bearers, Community Builders and Salvific Storytellers, is almost too much for me to take in at one time. When you couple this with the fact that “we dwell…. in this fascinating creation that includes heaven where God dwells, and earth, where we dwell, interlocking and intermingling….” (6) I can’t but feel overwhelmed by it all.
It takes all of us working together as a community and God working through us to declare that He rules and reigns. This is a powerful and exciting mission that we as Christians have in the world. “This is the gospel and our proclamation that Jesus Christ is King.” (7)
I realize that it is my responsibility as a worship leader to inspire and energize the church community and to remind them who we are and what we are here for. To join in with all creation in “the glad shout of praise that arises to God the creator and God the rescuer.” (8)

Worship Theology – The Nature of God
“For The Essentials Blue Online Worship History Course with Dan Wilt“
This weeks study was on the biblical nature of God. God as Creator, King, Trinity and Savior as well as our understanding of the phrase, “Kingdom of God”. An amazing amount of ideas and truths about God was covered. Such topics as “What is God Like”, “What Can We Know About God?”, “God’s Self-Revealing” and more.
Dan Wilt’s course material and his video on The Nature of God provided a great deal of information. (1.a, 1.b) In addition, I especially enjoyed reading part two of N. T. Wright’s book, “Simply Christian”. I usually highlight portions of books I read when I come across a thought or quote that is important and I want to refer back to later. I found in reading the study materials and Wright’s book, almost every paragraph had areas underlined and some double underlined. This may give you some idea of the wealth of information that was provided in our study.
The four ideas of the Nature of God we covered were:
- God As Creator
- God As King
- God As Trinity
- God As Savior
Keep in mind, we briefly covered these ideas and simple points were used to help us apply particular aspects of God’s character to our daily lives and our creativity in our worship. Although these four aspects of God’s character are not new to us as Christians, I find that we sometimes take these truths for granted or feel we cannot possibly understand them without being a theologian or biblical scholar. Either way, I believe we miss the richness and revealing stories told in Scripture of God’s nature and personality.
Through this study we approached these major, vital ideas listed above through a more creative, artistic thought process. Which for me, as a musician find delightful, but in reading the materials offered during this study I also found myself drawn deeper into theological study of the Scriptures.
In our discussion question, we were asked which of the four theological ideas on the Nature of God presented we believed would have the most importance for the next 10-20 years of worship leadership and why.
It was difficult for me to decide. My first thought was “God as Trinity”. In further considering the four ideas, I decided that “God as Savior” is also very important. In thinking about the doctrine of Christ it became clear to me that through the many saving natures of the cross that the four ideas all meet. It is through Jesus as Savior, “in this great saving act initiated by the “Trinity” in which God will rule and reign as King, God will restore Creation and through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit we become once again a part of the “WE community” (2). So I guess we are back to the “Trinity.”
The Trinity can be difficult to grasp or to explain in human terms. N. T. Wright stated “that the doctrine of the Trinity expressed in the scriptures in the Christian understanding of God was never meant to be a math equation confining our understanding of God, but rather a way of God expressing that He is beyond the confines of our wildest perceptions.” (3)
During this study, I learned a new term I had not heard before; “perichoresis.” which literally means “circular dance,” or “mutual indwelling.” Dan’s expressive description of the “circular dance” and the prose work, “The I, The We, And The Child” was very helpful in guiding me toward a better understanding of God, the Father; God, the Son; and God, the Holy Spirit. (4.a, 4.b)
As Dan Wilt said, one of the greatest challenges facing contemporary worship leaders will be in addressing songs, prayers, and words directly to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. (5) The doctrine of the Trinity is a mystery, but this does not prevent us from worshiping the different Persons of the Godhead in our worship songs and prayers.
There is an article by Dr. Don Williams and Brenton Brown in our study that provides wonderful theological thoughts and ideas for the worship leader in shaping and leading Trinitarian worship. (6)
I find N. T. Wright’s Trinitarian prayer quoted in the study is a perfect way of addressing the different Persons of the Trinity:
Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth;
Set up your kingdom in our midst.
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God;
Have mercy on me, a sinner.
Holy Spirit, breath of the living God;
Renew me and all the world. (7)
**************
Another discussion question asked was how our understanding of the theological phrase, the “Kingdom of God” has been challenged or shaped by section two of “Simply Christian.”
In answer, this is a fairly new term for me. In the churches I have attended, the phrase “the Kingdom of God” was seldom used, if ever. I knew that God was with us and I knew that the Kingdom would arrive at Christ’s return in the future, but I never fully grasped the meaning of the Kingdom being here and now.
In not only reading “Simply Christian” but other materials, I have truly come to a better understanding of what it means when we say “Kingdom of God”. I believe it is a key to our understanding the Bible.
The Kingdom of God is both present and future; both a growth and a final consummation by God. The Kingdom means both acceptance and action. I embrace the meaning of the Kingdom being the “already and the not yet”. I understand now why we as believers must live our lives as if we are currently in the presence of the reigning King. We must live under his laws and serve him.
I am thrilled to know that I can be a “part of the new creation in advance.” (8) Most importantly, I can rely on the promise that those of us who experience the Kingdom in the present will be full members in the age to come.
My mind is overflowing with the marvelous truths and blessings I have discovered in this week’s lesson and I can’t wait to dive deeper.

Worship Theology – Echoes of a Voice
“For: The Essentials Course Online Worship Course with Dan Wilt”
This is the first week of the Essentials Blue course in Worship Theology. Week 1 begins with our reading of N.T. Wrights’ book, Simply Christian (1). In part one of the book, N.T. Wright discusses the four areas in which in today’s world can be interpreted as “echoes of a voice”:
- 1. Putting the World to Rights - The longing for justice
- 2. The Hidden Spring - The quest for spirituality
- 3. Made for Each Other - The hunger for relationships
- 4. For the Beauty of the Earth - The delight in beauty
Of these four echoes, “beauty” stands out to me as evidence of God’s reality in the world. The beauty of God is visible in all creation, in the universe, in scripture and in the face of His Son, Jesus Christ. All these things are designed to awake within us the “breathtaking delight and incomparable joy of which God alone is worthy.” (2)
“We alone have been endowed with the capacity to glorify Him by rejoicing the in the beauty of his creative handiwork and relishing the splendor of his self-revelation in the person and redemptive work of His Son.” (3)
We can only see and hear what our finite minds can grasp. We only have a taste of the beauty of God. “Everything in the present world is a copy or shadow of something in that world. The voice of beauty gives us direct access to God and to the divine and points away from the present world to a different one altogether.” (4) Things of beauty are sounds and images of what we desire and long for.
We encounter the beauty of God’s personality when we spiritually read the Scriptures of all that God is and in all that he does and most wonderfully in the beauty of Jesus Christ. “Glory is the beauty of God unveiled. Glory is the resplendent radiance and His power and His personality.” (5) St. Augustine stated that God is beauty itself, referring to Him as “my Father, supremely good, beauty of all things beautiful.” (6)
In thinking about how these four echoes relate to the worship songs we use in church, I have to say that I enjoy the songs written by contemporary writers. Songs such as “God of Wonders” and “Indescribable” express the celebration of creation. “One Day” and “I Will Rise” the longing for peace and justice.” “Make Us One”, “I Love You with the Love of the Lord”, our relationships. “Holy Spirit, Rain Down”, and “Breath of God”, our hunger for spirituality. “Heaven and earth are full of God’s glory; …we are called to know that it is so, and to put that into words of praise.” (7)
There is even more contemporary Christian music being written today that I believe express our sense of awe, wonder, joy, delight and deep longings we feel inside when praising God. My hope is that as our contemporary song writers continue to grow spiritually in the knowledge of God, we will see even more extraordinary music being written for generations to come.
I am excited about the coming weeks of the Essentials Blue course as we dive deep into the Nature of God, The Nature of Human Beings and the Nature of Worship.

For: The Institute of Contemporary And Emerging Worship Studies, St. Stephen’s University, Essentials Green Online Worship Values Course with Dan Wilt.
As my creative project for the Essential Green’s I have chosen to write a song. This post includes my comments and copy of my lyrics. I will post the song in a separate post.
In The Garden of My Heart
(Explanation of the lyrics and music)
This is the first time I have ever tried my hand at writing a song or composing music. I am not a songwriter. I sing the melodies and messages of others as musical expressions of my heart. Here is my humble and earnest attempt to express my thoughts in song.
I used the “Essential Greens” theme as my setting. I have used gardening as a metaphor of Spiritual Formation and the worship values and spiritual habits are the seeds growing in my life. These make up the lyrics. The melody is more of a romantic style than contemporary. The melody is a simple expression of peace, quiet and serenity in the garden of my heart.
God is the Master Gardner and I am his garden. I see my soul as the ground, or foundation of my heart and life. I surrender myself like a field in the garden, to be plowed and made ready for God’s work in me. God sows the seeds of spiritual values and habits in my soul; intimacy, integrity, prayer, meditation, and so on. God adds seeds of truth and love to the mixture and tends my garden with loving and compassionate hands.
My soul is nourished by God’s voice speaking to me like water flowing over the ground and His Word is like the kiss of the sun, warming me.
As I begin to grow in the knowledge of God, the spiritual seeds in my soul turn into green sprouts, then grow tall and bloom, like flowers in a garden. My desire is that the flowers of my garden will be shared and enjoyed by others. My hope is that my life be transformed completely and I may yield a spiritual harvest of beautiful, healthy, fragrant flowers radiating the glory of God.

And the Lord alone was glorified in His planting and in His husbandry; by His care and by the blessing of His lips. By the beautiful planting of His right hand; and by the discovery of His planting, and by the thought of His mind. Hallelujah.
(The Odes of Solomon, 38: 20-21)
Lyrics by Bonnie Kennedy
IN THE GARDEN OF MY HEART
God prepares my soul with care, with His hands of mercy, Sowing seeds of truth and love, with His grace he covers me. He nurtures my soul as He speaks to me, His voice like waters flow, His Word like sunshine warms my soul, as the flowers bloom and grow.
In the garden of my heart, Ooh, the garden of my heart, With flowers bright and fair. In the garden of my heart
As my soul in joy and happiness, bring forth the flowers so sweet. May their fragrance flow to the one above, God’s special blessings complete. God is the gardener of my heart; He pours his love out for me. His Word gives life abundantly, like beautiful flowers so sweet.
In the garden of my heart, Ooh, the garden of my heart. With flowers bright and fair. In the garden of my heart
In the garden of my heart

Summary of Essentials Green Course
For: The Institute of Contemporary And Emerging WorshipStudies, St. Stephen’s University, Essentials Green Online Worship Values Course with Dan Wilt.
I have finished the module of the Essentials Green course and what wonderful seeds were planted on this journey. I feel truly blessed to have been part of the Essentials Green studies. I gleaned much information and new insights into the world of the worship leader and learned more about myself as a worshipper. I was just a new sprout and you watered me.
For me the segment on Spiritual Formation brought it all home. I would like to put my thoughts down using the theme of the course, that being the metaphor for growth, cultivation and nuturing of the soils of the heart.
The five worship values we studied are closely woven into the spiritual habits making up the essential spiritual seeds of my garden. God is the Master Gardener, of my garden, who prepares my soul and plants the spiritual seeds.
I pray God’s Word will continue to nourish my soul, as my garden grows and matures. My hope is that my garden will overflow with abundant green life producing beautiful, fragrant flowers for the glory of God.
Thank you for the walk down the garden path.

The Spiritual Formation of the Leader
For: The Institute Of Contemporary And Emerging Worship Studies, St. Stephen’s University, Essentials Green Online Worship Values Course with Dan Wilt“
“In this week’s study, we reflected on Spiritual Formation (discipleship) of the creative leader, and the elements that develop us into the likeness of Christ across the long-haul of our lives.” (1)
I enjoyed the selected readings from Devotional Classics. (2) Excerpts covered authors from C.S. Lewis, G.K. Chesterton to Ignatius of Loyola and Bernard of Clairvaux. The writings and perspectives of these authors are timeless and they provide a wonderful witness to us in our quest of discipleship.
I liked Dan Wilt’s description of Spiritual Formation, “as a soul’s journey throughout the course of a lifetime. It’s a journey to a person’s heart and a journey to the heart of God”. (3)
I especially found Bernard of Clairvaux’s writings insightful. Bernard speaks of the Four Degrees of Love in his treatise, “On The Love of God”: (4)
- First – Love of Self for Self’s Sake
- Second – Love of God for Self’s Sake
- Third – Love of God for God’s Sake
- Fourth – Love of Self for God’s Sake.
“First, we love ourselves for our own sake, since we are unspiritual and of the flesh we cannot have an interest in anything that does not relate to ourselves. When we begin to see that we cannot submit by ourselves, we begin to seek God for our own sakes. This is the second degree of love; we love God, but only for our own interests.”
The third degree quote is my favorite: “But if we begin to worship and come to God again and again by meditating, by reading, by prayer, and by obedience, little by little God becomes known to us through experience.”
I have been blessed over the years; which is not to say that my soul’s journey has been smooth. God has allowed me to experience a multitude of emotions in my life, which has brought me all the closer to Him. Through trials and troubles to wonderful blessings in my life, God has been continually preparing my heart for his work and the journey I would take to His heart.
Working many years in the corporate world I didn’t seem to have enough time to spend with God. I was “too busy”. My “exterior life activity was larger than my interior life of devotion.” (5) When I retired 10 years ago God graciously gave me the blessing that Bernard speaks of in the Third Degree of Love. I am now able to spend more time with God through reading and studying the scriptures daily; which I truly love. Through prayer and obedience, God has opened up a new world of theological study and insight. He has given me the opportunity to once again sing and play music for His Glory. I am learning to worship and go to God over and over again and when I do, I am drawn closer to God’s heart.
The third degree is where most of us stop. Bernard tells us that there is more. He suggests that there is one more step for us to take. Our goal is the fourth degree of love.
As Dan Wilt stated in our lesson, “There is a place in the disciple’s life that goes beyond the stage of recognition that God is worthy of all praise, and steps into the most intimate of partnerships with this glorious God.” (6)
Bernard was not sure that the fourth degree of love, in which we love ourselves only for the sake of God, could be perfectly attained in this Life. But, when it does happen we will experience a sense of oneness with God. However, there may be moments in our lives that we can experience this joy of becoming one mind and one spirit with God.
As I continue on my life’s journey, I pray that I may continue in building spiritual habits of reading, meditation, prayer, study, solitude, service, worship, devotion and obedience.
I pray that I will experience moments of the fourth degree of love. To learn the art of loving myself for God’s sake and to become so transformed that God shines through me. To love who I am, to turn my love toward God. To being fully devoted to glorifying God in all areas of my life and magnify Him in all that I do and say. Irenaeus of Lyons said it this way, “The glory of God is a human being, fully alive.” (7)
Our spiritual formation is developed and nurtured through the time we spend with God and God’s Word. This is a life of worship and our soul’s journey to Spiritual Formation.
